From experience, I know moving to a new country can feel lonely at first. Without familiar faces around, it’s easy to feel disconnected, but building a new social life is possible, especially in Canada. Here’s how to make friends, find community, and feel at home along your journey.
Step 1: Put Yourself in Social Environments

👥 Join Local Meetup Groups – Websites like Meetup.com and Facebook Groups have local events for everything from hiking to board games to professional networking.
🏋️♀️ Try Recreational Sports – Many cities have drop-in sports leagues for soccer, basketball, and more. It’s a great way to stay active and meet people.
🛐 Find Cultural & Religious Communities – If faith is important to you, consider connecting with a local mosque, temple, church, or cultural association.
Step 2: Start Conversations & Get Out of Your Comfort Zone

💬 Canadians are friendly so don’t be afraid to talk to people! Compliment someone’s shoes, ask about the best places to eat, or strike up a chat at a coffee shop.
💡 Be open to different cultures. You’ll meet people from all over the world, so embrace the diversity and learn from others.
Step 3: Volunteer & Give Back to the Community

📍 Volunteering is an amazing way to make friends. Check out volunteer.ca for opportunities in your area.
It takes time, but soon, you’ll find your people. Start small, be open to new experiences, and your social life will grow naturally! If you're struggling to take a step forward, feel free to get in contact with me or any of the other members of our Maple Connect community!
