Moving to Canada? Here’s what you should focus on in your first month.
The first 30 days in a new country can feel overwhelming, but breaking it down into clear steps will help you stay organized and confident. Here’s a roadmap for your first month in Canada:
Week 1: The Essentials (Setting Up Your Life in Canada)

✅ Get Your SIN (Social Insurance Number) – This is your gateway to working legally in Canada. You can apply at a Service Canada center by bringing your passport and work/study permit or PR card. The process is free and takes ab
out 15 minutes. ✅ Open a Bank Account – Most major banks offer newcomer banking packages with perks like free accounts and credit card offers. Consider RBC, TD, Scotiabank, CIBC, or BMO. ✅ Get a Local Phone Plan – Compare providers like Freedom Mobile, Fido, Rogers, Bell, or TELUS. Prepaid plans are great for short-term use, while contract plans may include phone discounts. ✅ Figure Out Transportation – Most cities have public transit apps like Presto (Toronto) or Compass (Vancouver). Get a transit pass and download Google Maps or Transit App to navigate easily.
Week 2: Housing, Healthcare & Community
🏠 Find Housing – Websites like Zolo, HouseSigma, and Property CA list rental properties. If possible, contact a Realtor and visit in person before paying deposits to avoid scams.

👩⚕️ Apply for Health Coverage – Each province has different healthcare rules. Apply for a health card ASAP through your province’s government website. In some provinces (like Ontario), there’s a waiting period, so consider temporary health insurance.
🤝 Join Local Groups – Look for newcomer communities, cultural associations, or hobby groups to meet people and feel more at home. Websites like Meetup.com and Facebook Groups are great places to start.
Week 3: Job Search & Financial Stability
💼 Start Job Hunting – Update your resume to Canadian standards (focus on achievements, remove personal details), create a LinkedIn profile, and apply on Indeed, LinkedIn, Workopolis, and company websites.

📚 Explore Learning Opportunities – Free courses from Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, or local community centers can boost your resume.
📊 Build Your Credit History – A good credit score is crucial in Canada. Apply for a credit card with your bank and make small purchases that you pay off on time.
Week 4: Adjust & Thrive

🏙 Explore Your City – Visit parks, downtown areas, and cultural centers to get familiar with your new home.
🌎 Give Back Through Volunteering – Many jobs require Canadian experience, and volunteering can help bridge that gap. Check Volunteer Canada or local community centers for opportunities.
🛒 Find Your Go-To Stores – Grocery stores: Walmart, No Frills, Superstore (budget-friendly), Sobeys, Loblaws (premium). Indian/Middle Eastern stores: check your city’s listings for international food markets (My favorite is Subzi Mandi in Mississauga).
The first month is all about laying the foundation for success. Take it step by step, and soon, Canada will feel like home!
